Affordable Living

Humboldt County families should have the freedom to choose among living options that are affordable and attractive. We can provide more choices for working families through a General Plan that prioritizes diverse housing options – rather than by limiting choice via the one-size-fits-all approach of rural sprawl.

Where we live is an important factor in how we live. Smart, well-planned development can improve community health by encouraging physical activity and reducing air pollution from cars; it can save families money by providing pedestrian and bicycle access to work, school, and shopping; and it can reduce government spending by making efficient use of existing infrastructure such as roads, sewers, and even schools. With thousands of lots already available for rural residential housing, the General Plan should encourage new development that increases housing diversity and provides additional options for affordable living.

The following General Plan Elements will impact our lifestyle choices. Click on any element to download the most recent draft from the County's website.

  • Land Use Element
Where we choose to build housing will shape the choices available to families for years to come.
  • Housing Element
Workforce housing must be affordable at the true cost of living, including transportation and energy expenses.
  • Energy Element and Air Quality Element
An effective energy plan will include steps to reduce dependence on cars, lowering both petroleum costs and carbon emissions.
  • Circulation Element
Encouraging multi-modal transportation options will provide affordable choices for commuting and other travel needs.
  • Economic Development Element
The type of economy activity we encourage will impact wages and commute patterns for workers. We should foster a living wage economy that increases the possibility of homeownership for working families.

It's up to us to speak up for this vision and ensure that the General Plan Update provides the blueprint for a future that is healthy for us all. You can help by getting involved today!
